Takeshi's Castle, SAUDI Arabia

Al Hosn Takeshi’s Castle is a show produced for the Saudi Arabian General Entertainment Authority (GEA) by Banader Gulf Media in line with Vision 2030 and the Saudi Quality of Life Program. It is an Arabic Version of the popular Japanese Game Show that aired between 1986 and 1990 on Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS). The original show features the Japanese Comedian Takeshi Kitano as the Count protecting his Castle which General Tani, played by Hayato Tani, attempts to take over. The General leads 100+ contestants through a series of difficult obstacles that the Count and his guards have set up to obstruct and eliminate the contestants. The series witnessed Japans top television and movie stars as special guests on the show alongside the regulars like Sonomanma Higashi, Leader of the Emerald Guard and later Advisor to Count Takeshi; Omori Utaemon, later the Leader of the Emerald Guard; Rakkyo Ide, the Shark and the Bald Monster; Junji Inagawa, Akira Sakamoto, and Shingo Yanagisawa, the Battlefield Reporters; and many others.

The Arabic version of the series spewed from the popularity of the Japanese dubbed series in the late 1980s throughout the Arab World, titled as Al Hosn, the show was syndicated to multiple television stations in different countries. The popularity was in large due to the comedic sense of the program and the voice over commentary of the Lebanese television personality, Riyad Sharara. Sharara was later replaced by the popular News Broadcaster Jamal Rayyan.

Al Hosn Takeshi’s Castle was endorsed by HRH Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and HE Turki Bin Abdulmohsen Al Alsheikh, Advisor to the Saudi Arabian Royal Court and Chairman of the Saudi Arabian General Entertainment Authority. With His Excellency’s quest to engage the Saudi youth and propel the Entertainment Industry within the Kingdom, Banader Gulf Media was commissioned to obtain the production rights of Takeshi’s Castle from Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS). In November, 2017, His Excellency signed a 10-year production agreement with the Chairman of Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS) and TBS TV, Mr. Toshichika Ishihara.

The Challenges are all uniquely designed to depict local architecture and give the sense of Arabization to the games. The Contestants are eliminated from the show if they fail to pass the challenges successfully. The Commander leads his Contestants through the Challenges that have been placed by the Emperor in every episode to the Final Showdown at the Fort.
